I still see the same dilemmas today in many of the organisations I consult to. persons struggling to cope with the emotional pressures of today&#8217;s workplace often resort to bitchiness, aggression, backstabbing, gossipping, complaining and other purely childish behaviours. And many in leadership positions are modeling these very behaviours! In short, organisations are tearing themselves apart from the inside out.</p>
<p>Time to Stop the Madness</p>
<p>Goleman says that the best remedy for battling our emotional shortcomings is prevention. In other words, we need to place as much importance on teaching our children the essential skills of Emotional Intelligence as we do on more traditional measures like IQ and school exams. And while were at it, why not teach every other these vital life skills? It&#8217;s never as well late to improve your own emotional intelligence.</p>
<p>What is Emotional Intelligence (commonly known as EQ)?</p>
<p>The term includes these five characteristics and abilities:</p>
<p>1. Self-awareness&#8211;knowing your emotions, recognizing feelings as they occur, and discriminating between them</p>
<p>2. Mood management&#8211;handling feelings so they&#8217;re relevant to the current situation and you react appropriately</p>
<p>3. Self-motivation&#8211;&#8221;gathering up&#8221; your feelings and directing yourself towards a goal, despite self question, inertia, and impulsiveness</p>
<p>4. Empathy&#8211;recognizing feelings in others and accurately recognising and tuning into their verbal and nonverbal cues</p>

<p>Why Do We Need Emotional Intelligence?</p>
<p>Research in brain-based learning suggests that emotional health is fundamental to effective learning. <p>These traits are all aspects of Emotional Intelligence. Basically, a student who learns to learn is much more apt to succeed. Emotional Intelligence has proven a better predictor of future success than traditional methods like the GPA, IQ, and standardized test scores.</p>

<p>Knowing what motivates the leader??s audience and playing to those motivators is the leader??s secret communications weapon. if the audience member is into making money, learning new things, helping persons, gaining power and influence, creating peace and harmony, and/or working within the framework of traditions and set parameters, or a combination of any of those factors, the successful leader knows it and focuses his or her communications it that direction.</p>
<p>Understanding motivation and behavior are key ingredients in the leaders inventory of skills that enable him or her to build an organization or division through effective communications and empowers them to rise up to the next level within the organization. Sure it??s great to know how to communicate well, but it??s even better when it helps you, the leader, create a less stressful and more efficient investment life.</p>
<p>The quicker the leader removes the old ??Just tell ?em what you want done and if they don??t do it fire ?em? mentality and begins approaching communications in a manner in which the recipient starts processing the messages instinctively, the easier it becomes to ??Get anyone else to do something you want done because he (or she) wants to do it.? What a wonderful feeling it is when the leader knows that he or she is in control by making his or her team members, staff, and/or colleagues think that they are!</p>

<p>2. Endless possibilities. Another factor causing many of us to feel regret is that in the American culture, there is a belief that life has no limits. Our culture has an insatiable appetite for new experiences, adventure, and newness. When faced with the reality that certain things will not work out or change, we find it hard to accept. Example: Karen has turned 45. She has never married and has no children. She has always believed that ??There is always tomorrow? and ??I have plenty of time to make my mark.? But now, realizing that she may never be a mother and probably won??t be the CEO of her business, she is feeling like life has passed her by.</p>
<p>3. No rules. Along with all of these options, our lives have become confusing because there are few guidelines for what choices we should make.</p>
<p>Example: Most women who have children struggle with the choices of what role employment should play in their lives, and many women feel like they made the wrong choice. <p>Now that&#8217;s all fine and dandy when you are a kid, running about, climbing trees and riding your bike to school. But at the onset of semi-sedentary adulthood, look out.</p>
<p>The onset of independent adulthood is the ideal opportunity for you to fix up your poor eating habits for a weight control diet, do a bit of research and eat nutritious meals that are good for you.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s never too late to get it right so if you start anytime soon no matter what your age or stage of overweight, you&#8221;ll feel and see the benefits within a few short weeks.</p>
<p>You really do need to find an exercise that you can learn to love. If you are almost totally uncoordinated because your Mum would never let you play team sports or drive you to the pool for training, you should consider walking.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s simple, its free and you&#8217;ve done it all your life. Just not quite anywhere near enough of it &#8211; but that is all going to change. Walking is the exercise of choice of the vast majority of fat loss success stories &#8211; nothing is stopping you from joining their ranks.</p>
<p>Get walking on those good solid legs of yours. Every day. 45 minutes to 1 hour will do it for you. Oh, go on then, take 1 day a week off, you deserve it and you&#8217;ll be rested and refreshed and looking forward to your next energetic walk after a little pause.</p>
<p>The aerobic nature of regular brisk walking is going to tone and lean your body and big boned or not, you are going to look great. Impressively statuesque, I&#8217;d reckon.</p>
<p>Take up the challenge. Neither genetic heritage nor a shonky upbringing should stop you from losing weight and getting fit.</p>
<p>Just disregard your genes.</p>
<p>Discount your dubious role models.</p>
<p>Reject your fatty &#8220;birthright&#8221; and thrust that fatness away from you. You will never look back.</p>
